Traffic around new Tampa(Bruce B Downs) on 75 can come to a halt at times due to sheer volume but it is not that bad but IMHO that is going out of the way down the west side of Florida to get to Miami unless you live over there. If one takes I-75 you bypass Tampa unless you get on I-275 and you also bypass the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. There is road construction going on just north of Valdosta GA on I-75 and has been for about three years. Orlando wasn't nearly as grating on my nerves as Tampa was/is. My intent is to take the eastern route next week. Plus that hour or so in Alligator alley lets you streak across the state at nearly unlimited speeds. 75 does allow you to cross that great bridge in Tampa, and Alligator alley isn't bad if you like sight-seeing. I would say that the stops for tolls are annoying, but easier than trying to get through Tampa on 75. I haven't had many issues driving the route, having taken I-75 all the way down, and taking the turnpike down the eastern side of the state. So you can subtract a few minutes for the shorter trip, but not many. On paper, the trip is about 12 hours from Kennesaw, GA, to the port of Miami. I made use of some free software to allow an interface between my Tomtom Go 300 and Google Earth, so I could actively plan routes using either the device or the program. I also use Google Earth, a free program you can get from Google. The hybrid map view, which overlays roads and such, on top of satellite photos of the area, is much better than Mapquests. Google Maps seems to be a few steps ahead of Mapquest except for accurately showing me business' near the route. The maps are larger, more presentable, and I like the options I can get for printing the maps out. Google Maps has proven much more handy than Mapquest. Port Everglades is only about 30 minutes north of the. Cruise line buses meet inbound flights for transfer to the port if you make arrangements in advance. Taxi rides to the cruise terminal (Port Everglades) are about 17. I'll be blogging on that trip extensively when I get back in two weeks. By air - Access to the large cruise terminal is easy and only about 2 miles (5 minutes) from the Ft. I'm due to make my first pilgrimage in for years along the I-75 path to Miami, give or take the Florida turnpike.
